Most times one is looking for the perfect words to say, when we have to console someone close to us. There are no perfect, right words!
Rarely does a response make something better. What makes something better is connection. A sense of empathy makes it better.
What is empathy? Is it similar to sympathy? No. Empathy is feeling with people. Still confused; not very clear as to why it is different from the over-used emotion of sympathy?

Empathy is really the opposite of spiritual meanness. It’s the capacity to understand that every war is both won and lost. And that someone else’s pain is as meaningful as your own.
