Vienna Coffee culture: Coffee along with Water

Typical way coffee is served in Austria.

Typical way coffee is served in Austria; coffee, a glass of water, a bite of chocolate and some sugar on the side

Vienna has a very distinctive coffee culture. Unlike anywhere else in the world, coffee is served along with a complimentary glass of water always in a typical Viennese coffee house. Some cafe’s even give a piece of chocolate along with the ordered coffee. In fact the coffee is served this way not just in Vienna, but across Austria.

The atmosphere of these coffee houses is laid back and most people are seen enjoying their cuppa along with a newspaper/ or something to read, or just with another soul.

I would say, it is a must-do experience if one visits Vienna/Austria .i.e. go to a typical Austrian coffee house, order a coffee and some cake. Be a Viennese/Austrian for some time!

I would love to do it very often, I simply loved loved Vienna; the place has it all, culture, elegance, history, beauty and last but not the least some great shopping!

I have wondered why the culture of a glass of water with some coffee? I don’t know really.  maybe just to clear the mouth of any coffee-after-taste!

Agree with Mark Twain’s words ….

The best coffee in Europe is the Vienna coffee, compared to which all other coffee is fluid poverty
